Alen Bibich

Domaine Bibich is based in the village of Plastovo, near Skradin on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. The Bibich family has been making wine in the region for more than 500 years, with records dating back to the late 1400s. For many years, the estate was led by the late Alen Bibich, whose work helped bring international attention to Croatian wine through a focus on native grapes like Debit, Plavina, Lasina, and Babić, alongside varieties like Syrah and Grenache.

Alen was more than a winemaker. He was one of the great ambassadors for Croatian wine and hospitality. He welcomed guests from around the world into the family’s garden, cellar, and dining room, and he had a gift for making people feel connected to the region through food and wine. The winery gained global attention after appearing on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, and for many people Bibich became a first introduction to Dalmatian wine culture. His passing was a major loss for the Croatian wine community and for the many people who knew him personally or through his wines.

Today, the Bibich estate continues to reflect Alen’s vision. The vineyards are farmed organically, and many of the vines are old, low-yielding parcels planted in limestone-rich soils near the Adriatic coast. Their wines range from fresh, mineral-driven whites to structured reds, often with a savory, food-friendly character. The winery remains one of Croatia’s best-known food and wine destinations, with Alen’s wife Vesna and the broader Bibich team continuing the work he built over decades..
